HOW TO GET STARTED ORGANIZING MY FRIDGE

Let's start from the beginning with some simple tips on how to get your fridge ready to be organized. I have honed my fridge organization into 7 Simple Steps to make it so easy to get the look you want.

WHAT CATEGORIES SHOULD I ORGANIZE MY FRIDGE IN?

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO STORE ITEMS IN MY FRIDGE?

Sure you want a fridge that looks amazing, but it is also important to keep your food items safely stored to increase the food quality and decrease your food waste. This is important to keep in mind with the placement of food items.

Your fridge is designed to have multiple sections at varying temperatures to keep food items fresher for longer. Here is a breakdown of the sections of the fridge and what to store in each section.

TOP SHELF

This area is one of the warmest spots in your fridge. You will want to put items like leftovers or packaged items like yogurts in the top area since they are already cooked items or have been sealed appropriately and will not spoil as quickly as other fruits and veggies.

MIDDLE SHELF

The middle shelf tends to have the most consistent temperatures in your fridge. Storing items like milk and eggs in this section is a great idea to spoil help prevent spoiling since it will be stored at a consistent temperature.

BOTTOM SHELF

The bottom shelf is the coldest section of the shelves in the fridge. Storing meat, poultry, and fish here will keep these items from spoiling.

DRAWERS

The drawers of the fridge should store items that have a tendency to rot or wilt like fruits and vegetables. High humidity is better for wilting vegetables (i.e. carrots) while low humidity is better for fruits and vegetables that tend to rot (i.e. pears).

SIDE DOOR

The side door of the fridge is the other area that is considered the warmest in your fridge. Storing items that have longer expiration dates (usually high in vinegar and salt) like dressings or condiments are great in this section.

GENERAL FRIDGE STORAGE BINS

So where do you begin with all of the storage solutions on the market? Below are some of the best containers that can be used in your fridge. I personally like containers that can be cleaned easily and offer multiple configurations to evolve with your fridge over time.

It is important to make sure you measure your shelf spaces prior to ordering any products to make sure that they will fit your desired organizational plan. All of these containers are designed to fit into standard fridge spaces, but make sure you have an idea for your plan of attack to save you some time and money.

LAZY SUSAN'S/TURNTABLES

I am a sucker for Lazy Susan's in many of my organizational designs since they are so versatile and make hard-to-use spaces accessible. Fridge space is at a premium and it is so important to have solutions that are practical in place.

Below are some of my favorite options on the market today. Use them in your fridge design to easily store everything from your sauces and condiments to your beverages. These are especially great if you have a side-by-side style fridge and have trouble getting the items constantly get shoved to the back. The turntables keep everything easily accessible and organized!

EGG STORAGE BINS

Another must for any fridge organization would be an egg storage bin. Not only are these bins more durable than the containers that the eggs come in from the store, but I like the option of being able to see when we are running low on this essential item at a glance.

I personally like to recommend egg containers that have the option of being stackable for households that consume large amounts of eggs and need multiple containers. Also, you have the option of being able to utilize the vertical space in that shelf by stacking items on top of the eggs if needed without worrying about damaging them.

Try out the first option for egg storage that allows your eggs to scroll down automatically so you never need to reach for an egg again. This one is my personal favorite.

DRINK STORAGE

Beverage storage is essential for a well-organized fridge. There is a challenge with the size of containers and even the shape that can make your fridge disorganized easily.

I like to recommend organizers that can either be stacked or dispensed automatically to save on space as well as keep your items easily accessible. Below are some of my favorite options to keep your drinks organized.

In addition to these items, I also like to use turntables to save on space for larger beverage containers or opened bottles of wine.

FREEZER STORAGE BINS

Freezer storage items need to be especially durable and sturdy. Give your freezer a good inventory to see what items you consistently store there to determine the amount and size of bin storage.

You might also want to pick up some reusable freezer bags that are designed to make your food last longer than the traditional bags, plus you can save some money. Another fun item to try out would be these freeze food tray cubes that let you conveniently store food or raw ingredients in the freezer tray that then pops out easily when you want to use them. These are perfect for soups or even meat storage and are also stackable to save on space.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLE STORAGE

Fruit and vegetable storage requires some specialized containers that have vent systems that can regulate the flow of air and control the humidity inside of the container. This is essential to help prevent spoilage and keeps the shelf life of fruits and vegetables longer in the refrigerator.

Below are some of my favorite options for fruit and vegetable storage. I prefer containers that are easily stackable so that you can utilize the vertical space in your fridge.

LEFTOVER STORAGE

Especially now, more and more people are cooking at home and have leftovers that need to be stored. I like to use clear containers that make it easy to see what items you have in your fridge at a glance. Using storage containers that can easily double as a plate is also great to cut down on the number of dishes that you might have to do. I like to find stackable containers that can be used in the oven, dishwasher, and microwave.

Another fun storage option is mason jars that you can easily store on a turntable or even on the side of your door to save on space. Try out these cute mason jar tops that not only give you a pop of color in your fridge, but you can use these to set up an organized system with certain colors corresponding to family members or days of the week for food prepping.

I know I am not the only one that has pulled out a mystery leftover and had no idea when it was from. Save yourself the trouble by investing in some labels that are designed to go on your containers. Now you can easily identify the item of food and when to eat it.

CREATE MORE SPACE ITEMS- PULL OUT SHELVES/ STACKING SHELVES

Vertical space is often the area where most people do not maximize in their fridges. There are two options to maximize this space, pull-out and stackable shelves.

Stackable shelving is great for adding tiered organization for smaller items like yogurts or snack items.

Pull out shelves are also essential to maximize the space in your fridge. You can easily store items like deli meats or even eggs under a shelf now.

HOW TO LABEL ITEMS IN THE FRIDGE

Now that everything is organized, how do you keep it that way? I cannot stress enough the importance of labeling storage bins, containers, and organizers. Below are some of the best label options on the market.

If you like the look of the vinyl labels, but don't know how to DIY yourself, you are in luck with these premade labels for fridge organizational storage bins. Another option would be these labels that are reusable chalkboard labels.

I personally prefer this marker for long-term waterproof labeling in the fridge and these chalk markers that come in multiple colors for any chalk labels.
